Regaining the Drivers Seat of Your Life
Jul 25, 2022The reality is that there is never a good time to regain the driver's seat & take back control of your life. It is easy to fall into traps, or more so illusions, of “When I hit X amount in business then I will __” or “When I achieve __ then I can focus on truly being happy because I will have financial security”. It is easier to allow fear & cancel culture to take the steering wheel.
Yet in any of these scenarios happiness & truly regaining the drivers seat will forever be illusive, despite the level of success you reach. The business or career of your dreams, the wealth accumulated, becomes a gilded cage, no more free than without all the “stuff”.
True freedom begins with having the courage to sit in the discomfort of truly taking back the steering wheel of your life, which may include challenging your current views/ beliefs, improving boundaries, identifying blind spots, boldly declaring your views, & rewiring your mindset. True freedom comes with the willingness to truly see things differently as how you are currently seeing them is giving you more of what you currently have.
Ra Uru Hu said “it takes courage to be yourself”. And true courage comes with a grittiness, an unwillingness to give up. In Positive Psychology grit is referred to as an underlying belief that with effort, practice, & willingness to learn we can always improve. Gritty people focus on controlling what they can, leveraging their strengths, & instead of simply setting performance goals for the outcomes they want, they prioritize their learning goals that highlight the knowledge and skills they need to build to have the best chance of producing the desired results. This boosts their confidence to take on new challenges, to learn from criticism and feedback, to see failure as a teachable moment.
The cosmic joke is that when you come from this place, true flow begins to open up as you begin to truly leverage your strengths in a culture that tells you that who you are isn’t enough & that you need to work more on your weaknesses.
