Why ADHD Advice Fails Entrepreneurs with an Undefined Root (BG5)
Dec 04, 2024
If you’re an entrepreneur with ADHD, chances are you’ve tried everything to manage overwhelm: time-blocking, productivity apps, mindset shifts… and yet, it still feels like nothing sticks. The stress keeps piling up, the overwhelm feels endless, and every strategy seems to fall apart after a week.
Here’s the thing: it’s not your fault—and it may not even be your ADHD.
Traditional ADHD advice often misses a critical piece of the puzzle: your Human Design and the root cause of what is causing the overwhelm in the first place.
Now, Human Design isn't the be all end all. I do not believe in an approach that is either strictly traditional strategies or simply Human Design/ BG5. Human Design gives us the map to understand why certain patterns show up, while holistic strategies give us the tools to address the whole person. Together, they help you create systems that actually work for your unique wiring—so you can thrive in life and business.
Let’s take the undefined Root Center as an example to show you how this works.
The Undefined Root: Why You’re Absorbing Stress That Isn’t Yours
In Human Design, the Root Center governs stress, pressure, and drive. If you have an undefined Root, you’re highly susceptible to absorbing external stress from those around you—whether it’s your boss, your clients, or even the constant societal pressure to “hustle harder.”
This stress doesn’t just sit on the surface; it becomes internalized, driving you to take on more than you can handle and creating a vicious cycle of overwhelm. For entrepreneurs, this might look like:
- Saying “yes” to last-minute client requests—even if it derails your schedule.
- Overcommitting to deadlines because you feel the pressure to please.
- Constantly pushing yourself to work longer and harder, even at the expense of your health.
Now, let’s layer ADHD into the equation.
Why ADHD Alone Isn’t the Whole Story
ADHD brains often struggle with executive functioning, making it harder to prioritize tasks and stick to schedules. But here’s the nuance most ADHD advice misses: the problem isn’t always ADHD.
For example:
- A time-blocking strategy might fail for someone with an undefined Root—not because of ADHD, but because they’re absorbing pressure from their clients or boss and constantly overriding their own schedule.
- Similarly, mindset shifts might fall flat because they don’t address the underlying energetic dynamics causing the stress in the first place or keeping you in patterns that don't serve.
This is where Human Design as the map changes everything.
Human Design as the Map, Holistic Strategies as the Solution
Human Design provides the why. It shows us how your energy works, where you’re most susceptible to external influences, and why certain strategies either stick or fail.
But knowing this isn’t enough. A map doesn’t build the road—it just shows you where to go.
That’s why I combine Human Design insights with holistic strategies that address the whole person. For someone with an undefined Root, this might include:
- Setting Boundaries: Learning to say “no” to last-minute requests that derail your priorities.
- Stress Management Practices: Incorporating daily movement, breathwork, or mindfulness to discharge the stress you’re absorbing from others.
- Prioritization Skills: Differentiating between external pressure (others’ expectations) and internal priorities (what actually matters for your goals).
You see, Human Design/ BG5 ALONE isn't enough. Piling your brain with more information will likely lead to more overwhelm and rabbit holes that take you off track of actionable strategies that work in the now. I often say to my clients "If you want to learn Human Design/ BG5 go to the IHDS BG5 Institute. My job is to leverage my experience and trainings in these modalities to help you create real transformation. Information alone won't do that".
Why Traditional ADHD Advice Fails Undefined Roots
Let’s break this down even further.
If a traditional ADHD coach sees someone struggling with overwhelm, they might recommend time blocking to structure their day. But for an undefined Root, that advice falls short because it doesn’t address the root cause: the constant absorption of external pressure. Until that is addressed you can implement strategies, however they are unlikely to stick... and maybe you are nodding along relating as you read this!
Even the best time-blocking strategy will fail if you’re saying “yes” to demands that don’t fit into your schedule. This has nothing to do with ADHD—and everything to do with your undefined Root Center.
The real solution is twofold:
- Clarity through Human Design: Identifying the true source of overwhelm and stress.
- Holistic Strategies: Building systems that work with your design, not against it.
My Approach: The Map + The Road
What sets my work apart is this dual focus:
- Human Design as the Map: I use Human Design to pinpoint your unique energetic blueprint, showing us exactly where the stress and overwhelm are coming from.
- Holistic Strategies for Transformation: I combine this insight with practical, ADHD-friendly strategies that help you redesign your life and business in alignment with your wiring.
This isn’t just about managing ADHD or learning Human Design—it’s about creating a system that helps you thrive.
An Example: Redesigning Life with an Undefined Root
One of my clients, a 4/6 Generator entrepreneur with an undefined Root, was stuck in a cycle of overwhelm. She would say “yes” to every client request, overpack her schedule, and constantly feel stressed and behind. She knew she "shouldn't" do that, and realized it burned her out, however she was constantly moving from pressure.
She had previously worked with a mindset coach that specialized in ADHD strategies like time-blocking and working on limiting beliefs, however those weren’t working. Frustrated and overwhelmed, slightly convinced this would be her reality forever, she sought me out. Through working with her design we addressed the root cause of her problem, she was absorbing her clients’ stress and treating their deadlines like emergencies. She wasn't necessarily afraid of upsetting them or being rejected by them. She simply felt their pressure and made it her own.
Here’s what changed:
- Clarity from Human Design: We identified her undefined Root as the source of the overwhelm and created a system to check in with her own priorities before saying “yes.”
- Stress Management: She started using a 5-minute breathing exercise to release external pressure before tackling her day.
- Redesigned Systems: She restructured her offers to give herself more space between client deadlines.
Within weeks, she was less stressed, more productive, and finally in control of her schedule.
Why This Approach Works
Human Design gives us the clarity to understand why you’re struggling. Holistic strategies give us the tools to create lasting change.
Together, they transform overwhelm into alignment—so you can thrive in life and business.
